چکیده

Real-time three-dimensional (3D) interactive displays refer to display devices servo to the line of sight of a user, allowing not only free head motion, but also potentially and importantly full body mobility. Ideally, one could wish for such capability to exist without the need to wear any viewaided device. However, unless a display system could be created in space, anywhere and anytime, a simple solution is to wear the display. Such displays are today rather referred to as head-worn displays, but historically they have been referred to as head-mounted displays (HMDs). Because humans have not evolved to wear heavy devices, the challenge of interfacing such displays to the human head is tremendous given that the challenge is to design HMDs with lightweight optics as well as lightweight and ergonomic optomechanical headsets. Because some of the display specifications play against each other in achieving a lightweight and ergonomic display, it is critical to drive such display design with targeted applications and associated tasks that will help prioritizing the display requirements.

Design and development of hardware and software for wireless Head-Mounted Displays

With the introduction of a new head-mounted displays models on the consumer market, the interest to those devices raised dramatically in the recent past. Although only a few wireless head-mounted display models are available today, there is a certain range of applications where those are required. Existing solutions that allow using conventional head-mounted displays for such applications wirel...

Head-Mounted Display Image Configurations

A scheme for organizing head-mounted displays based primarily on image configuration and secondarily on the display/optics and head-mounted sensor(s) is offered as a way to clarify design and human interface issues. These attributes are linked to field-of-view, image content and device applications. An argument is made for discarding confusing and outdated concepts. This organization of a diver...

Predictive tracking for head - mounted displays A dissertation proposal

First demonstrated in 1968 [Suther68], head-mounted displays [HMDs] have the potential to immerse a user inside a “virtual world,” where the user can view and interact with computer-generated three-dimensional environments. However, today’s systems far fall short of creating completely convincing virtual environments. Much work remains in overcoming limitations in the technologies that drive HM...

Multiple Head Mounted Displays in Virtual and Augmented Reality Applications

With the recent introduction of low cost head mounted displays (HMDs), prices of HMD-based virtual reality setups dropped considerably. In various application areas personal head mounted displays can be utilized for groups of users to deliver different context sensitive information to individual users. We present a hardware setup that allows attaching 12 or more HMDs to a single PC. Finally we ...

Engineering of head-mounted projective displays.

Head-mounted projective displays (HMPD's) are a novel type of head-mounted display. A HMPD consists of a miniature projection lens mounted upon the user's head and retroreflective sheeting material placed strategically in the environment. First, the imaging concept of a HMPD is reviewed and its potential advantages and disadvantages are discussed. The design and a bench prototype implementation...
